78 College Departments to Close Down Starting 2015

The General Scholastic Ability Test (大學學科能力測驗, GSAT), one of Taiwan’s university and college entrance examinations for senior high school students, will be held on February 1, 2015. However, owing to Taiwan’s low birth rate, 78 fewer university/college departments will be recruiting new students this year, a record high decline.

Next year, 30,000 fewer new students are expected than this year, so even more university/college departments are expected to stop recruiting students.

According to the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) statistics, departments that have ceased recruiting new students are mostly in technical and technological universities/colleges. Among the 78 departments, 72 departments are in technical and technological universities/colleges, while 6 are in general universities. In addition, most of the abovementioned departments offer courses in the services industry and business management, such as tourism, hospitality and travel, and leisure, as well as business administration.

The reason departments ceased recruiting new students this year is because of the poor recruitment rate in 2014, or the transformation of the schools themselves.
