Wang Jin-pyng: I Will Answer Call of Duty If Party Drafts Me

On June 7, Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) stated that as a Taiwanese, he was of course concerned about Taiwan’s future development and he would answer the call of duty to run in the 2016 Presidential Election if the KMT should draft him.
KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) stated that he was glad to see Wang’s willingness to run in the 2016 Presidential Election, but Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) was the only KMT member who registered in the party primary and the party would complete its primary in accordance with the rules.
The Presidential Office made no comment, save to say that it would respect decisions made by the KMT party central.
Hung stressed that she was glad to see Wang’s willingness to share the burden, but the party primary must be completed first. Hung went on to say that if she could pass the final threshold, i.e., a minimum of 30% support rating in the party’s Presidential primary opinion polls, the issue of drafting a candidate would be moot, but if she should fail to pass the threshold, it was a good thing that someone within the party would shoulder responsibility.
When interviewed by the Taipei-based United Daily News on June 7, Wang further explained what he meant when he said he would answer the call of duty to accept decisions made by the party. The statement was not referring only to a draft of Presidential nominee. It also included the possibility of party’s decision "to nominate me" on the party list for at large legislators and running for Legislative Speaker again, or other arrangements, he added.
