Ma: Truth of the War Should Not Be Forgotten

President Ma Ying-jeou stated yesterday the commemorative events to mark the victory in China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression were being held not to tout the ROC's victory, but to pursue peace. Ma stated that "Our belief is that aggression might be forgiven, but the truth of the war should not be forgotten."

Meanwhile, in response to Lien's remarks in Beijing, Presidential Office spokesperson Charles Chen (陳以信) stated that the efforts in the War of resistance Against the Japanese Aggression both on the frontlines and behind enemy lines were all under the leadership of the Nationalist government in Mainland China. Chen added, "historical facts about the war can never be denied." Chen also reiterated the government's position that "it would not be appropriate for ROC citizens to attend the September 3rd military parade in Beijing."

According to the Presidential Office, the statement "the KMT's war efforts on the main battlefields and the CCP's war efforts behind enemy lines jointly contributed to the eventual victory" in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was historically inaccurate. The CCP's Mao Zedong had stated clearly at the beginning of the War in 1937 that the CCP would use 70% of its strength for self-development, 20% for compromise (with the Nationalist government) and 10% for fighting against the Japanese. Moreover, Mao stated candidly during two separate meetings with Japanese officials after the war, that the Japanese invasion had helped the CCP to expand more quickly. Charles Chen stated that among the 268 general officers who lost their lives in the eight-year war, only one was of CCP affiliation. Therefore, it was clear how little the CCP had contributed to the war efforts, Chen concluded.
