The KMT caucus proposed on May 23 a draft resolution titled “Strongly Object that President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) Lift Ban on US Pork Imports with Ractopamine for the Sake of Taiwan’s Accession to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP),” and requested that the draft resolution be referred to a plenary session for a second reading.

Yesterday, the LY plenary session voted 51-31, to reject the KMT caucus’s request and referred the draft resolution to a joint session of the Economics Committee, the Welfare, Health, and Environment Committee, and the National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee for review.

Last week, the KMT caucus proposed a similar draft resolution to the LY plenary for first reading, demanding that the new government strictly enforce the ban on imports of foreign pork containing ractopamine residue, but the DPP majority in the LY blocked the move.

KMT legislators expressed anger about the result yesterday and held a placard in protest on the legislative floor that read “Health of Citizens Should Not Be Used for Exchange of Any Interests.”

KMT legislator Alicia Wang (王育敏), co-convener of the Welfare, Health, and Environment Committee (WHEC), demanded that the draft resolution be referred to the WHEC for review, not to a joint session of the three legislative committees as demanded by the DPP caucus.

During a meeting at the Presidential Palace yesterday with a US delegation led by Marcus Jadotte, US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis, President Tsai Ing-wen stated that Taiwan wanted to strengthen economic ties with the US and hoped that the US would support Taiwan’s bid to join the second round of TPP negotiations.

Tsai stated that Taiwan would begin to restructure industries and enhance their competitiveness. In addition, Taiwan would revise relevant laws and regulations in order to conform with international standards.
