Tsai Ing-wen this morning began her first official visit as President of the Republic of China (ROC) to Latin America, Panama and Paraguay.

At the invitation of Panama President Juan Carlos Varela, President Tsai will attend the inauguration ceremony for the expanded Panama Canal on June 26 and leave for Paraguay on June 27. There she will meet with President Horacio Cartes and deliver a speech to the Congress of Paraguay. She will make stopovers in Miami and Los Angeles for the outbound and inbound legs of her journey, respectively.

Before departing, President Tsai held a press conference at the Taoyuan International Airport. She stated that she felt a heavy responsibility because this was the first time for her to conduct an official visit as ROC President to our diplomatic partners and convey the message that the people of Taiwan were willing to make contributions to the world.

President Tsai mentioned three objectives of her trip: (1) Enhancing Taiwan’s visibility in the international community; (2) Bolstering the confidence of ROC diplomats, overseas Chinese, businessmen and workers in non-governmental organizations; and (3) Strengthening Taiwan’s economic/trade ties with Latin American countries.
