Tour Bus Blaze Tragedy: Mainland Official Expresses Strong Dissatisfaction

 July 22, 2016

On July 19, a tour bus caught on fire on its way to the airport and home, claiming the lives of all on board, including 24 tourists from the Mainland’s Dalian City, the driver and a local tour guide.

Luan Xusheng, deputy director of Dalian City’s Taiwan Affairs Bureau, led families of the Mainland victims to Taiwan yesterday. Upon arriving at the funeral parlor, 49 family members of the Mainland victims could not hold back their tears when viewing pictures of their loved ones.

Liu Kezhi (劉克智), secretary-general of the Mainland’s Cross-Strait Tourism Association, who headed a task force to Taiwan to handle matters related to the accident, expressed “strong dissatisfaction” with Taiwan’s safety measures to protect Mainland tourists during visits to the island.

Liu stated that the Mainland had previously relayed its concerns over the safety of Mainland tourists during their travels to Taiwan’s relevant agencies after a number of major traffic accidents involving Mainland tourists occurred in the past, requesting that Taiwan authorities adopt practicable measures to ensure the safety of Mainland tourists.

Liu went on to say that Taiwan had to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy, adding that he hoped Taiwan would enhance safety measures to protect Mainland tourists and to ensure that no more deadly traffic accidents would occur again in the future.
