Zhang Zhijun (張志軍), director of the Taiwan Affairs Office under the Mainland’s State Council, recently warned that Mainland authorities would not allow Taiwan businessmen to make money on the Mainland only to return to Taiwan to support the Taiwan independence movement.
Hai Pa Wang (海霸王集團), a well-known restaurant chain in Taiwan which has long been rumored to have a close relationship with the Tsai Ing-wen family, placed an advertisement in a local newspaper yesterday to clarify that it did not support the pan-Green camp. Hai Pa Wang’s ad pledged the company’s unequivocal support for the “one China” principle that “both sides of the Strait belong to one China” and cross-Strait peace.
The advertisement noted that Hai Pa Wang was a family-controlled business, and the only business the company had with the Tsai Ing-wen family was a leasing contract for a commercial building located in Taipei City.
According to informed sources, Hai Pa Wang chairman Chuang Jung-te (莊榮德) has been displeased about public speculation regarding the restaurant chain’s relations with the Tsai family, so he decided to place a prominent advertisement in a local newspaper to dispel the rumors. However, he never expected that the ad would cause such reverberations.
Hai Pa Wang general-manager Lee Hui-shan stated that the whole incident resulted from news reports in Mainland media using incorrect information, and she also denied news reports that Hai Pa Wang’s Mainland branch was under tax audit by Mainland authorities.
In response to Hai Pa Wang’s statement that “both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China,” the Presidential Office stressed yesterday that it was regrettable to see Taiwan businessmen’s investments and operations on the Mainland were ensnared by politics.
Yesterday, Katherine Chang (張小月), chairwoman of the Mainland Affairs Council, answered questions during interpellations in the Legislative Yuan. She stated that Taiwanese businesses had made significant contributions to Mainland China, not only generating profits but also creating many jobs. She called on the Mainland authorities not to arbitrarily affix political labels to Taiwanese businesses; instead, it should implement the cross-Strait Investment Guarantee Agreement for the protection of Taiwanese businessmen on the Mainland.
