In an interview on a CTi TV political talk show, former Vice President Wu Den Yih stated that he would support Terry Guo if Guo should choose to run in the 2020 Presidential election. On the show, former legislator Shen Fu-Hsiung asked Wu, “As support for President Tsai continues to drop, many in the Kuomintang (KMT) – including yourself – are gearing up to make political maneuvers. If you were the KMT chairperson, would you support Terry Guo’s run for presidency in the next election if he has the intent and surpasses President Tsai in the polls?”
To that, Wu replied that the powers that be in the KMT, be it the Central Standing Committee or the National Party Congress, would undoubtedly pick a group of presidential nominees that is the best, with the highest chance of winning and that “Terry Guo is definitely one of the candidates to consider.” When pressed further about whether he would support Guo, an independent, Wu replied that he “is 100% in support of Guo”, adding that if there “are no other candidates in the KMT that can match up to Guo, he would certainly be the right choice.”
Many in the KMT believed that Wu’s participation in the upcoming KMT chairmanship election is done with an eye towards the 2020 Presidential election. His remarks on supporting Terry Guo received a lot of attention from the media. A core member on Wu’s team, however, emphasized that Wu’s comments were made in the flow of conversation during the talk show, adding that Wu’s logic was that hypothetically, if on the whole the KMT approved of Guo – and in the absence of other equally competent candidates – if Wu were to become chairperson, he would support Guo as the KMT standard bearer in the 2020 presidential race. However, if the KMT “decides that Wu is the right candidate to represent the KMT in the run for presidency, Wu would without a doubt assume the mantle,” said the same source.
