A National Affairs Conference (NAC) on pension/annuities reform, originally scheduled for January 21st  to 22nd at the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC), will be held instead at the Presidential Palace for one day only, on January 22. Vice President Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁), the convener of the National Pension Reform Committee (NPRC), stated that after careful considerations, the NPRC decided to compress the two-day National Affairs Conference into a one-day event on January 22 in order to ensure public safety, lower the impact on commercial activities, and avoid disrupting General Scholastic Ability Test (GSAT,學測), scheduled at the same time, as protesters may likely show up, causing negative impacts on examinees’ rights.

The NPRC previously planned to change the venue of the NAC from the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) to Academia Sinica. However, yesterday afternoon the Presidential Office announced that the NAC would be held at the Presidential Palace instead. Chen explained that holding the conference at the Presidential Palace symbolized the government’s commitment to its promise to restructure the nation’s pension/annuities system because the first NPRC conference was held at the Presidential Palace as well.

The two-day National Affairs Conference has turned into a one-day event because January 21 falls on the day of the GSAT. In addition, Taipei First Girls High School (TFGHS,北一女中), one of the venues for the GSAT, is adjacent to the Presidential Palace. Consequently, to avoid disruptions of the exam at the TFGHS by protest groups, the NAC has been rescheduled for January 22.
