In an opening address at the 4th Cross-Strait Economic Forum in Taipei yesterday, former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) pointed out that the official recognition of the 1992 Consensus during eight years under his administration did not demean the ROC’s sovereignty but safeguarded the international space for the nation because cross-Strait diplomatic truce only came after the recognition of the 1992 Consensus. Ma went on to say, without the diplomatic truce, it was impossible for the ROC to participate in the World Health Assembly or the International Civil Aviation Organization, or to be granted visa-free treatment by a total of 164 countries and regions.
In addition, Ma stated that people were boggled by Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) sudden utterance of his view on “pro-China, loving Taiwan” and the statement was also echoed by the Presidential Office. Ma added that“in the past, whenever ‘pro-China’ was mentioned by him, it was always followed by others’ labeling of ‘selling out Taiwan’ and then followed further by references to ‘Ma Ying-jeou’." He thus raised questions about why the pro-China statement suddenly became Green camp’s hot subject.
Ma gave the Tsai administration a reminder that it had better recognize anew the 1992 Consensus, otherwise it would indeed be very difficult to predict the situation in the future.
