The 2016 TOEIC global test scores were made public recently and Taiwan was ranked No. 6 in Asia. Premier Lai Ching-te stated that he would plan to place English as "the second official language" of Taiwan.
Regarding this news story, the "Global Times" of the Mainland carried an editorial on the 16th, saying that the Tsai government’s listing local dialects as "national languages" and pushing English as an official language had something in common, i.e., "conducive to easing out the Han Chinese language"; "people cannot but question that the real objective of some DPP people’s glorifying English is, in fact, "Taiwan independence."
The "Global Times" editorial points out that among all the countries and regions in the world that have placed English as an official language, the overwhelming majority were former colonies. They place English as an official language to satisfy the needs of internal exchanges in society. We have yet to hear of any country or region that has listed English as an official language for "internationalization."
