October 17, 2017

Yesterday, the Taiwan Competitiveness Forum (TCF,台灣競爭力論壇), a local think tank, released the results of its latest opinion poll on the public's national identity in the second half of 2017. According to the poll, 50.2% of the respondents identified themselves as Chinese, while 44.7% denied they were Chinese. In addition, 86.5% of the respondents opined that they belonged to the Chinese nation, while 7.5% thought otherwise.

If both sides across the Taiwan Strait could not maintain the status quo, 55.4% of the respondents were of the opinion that Taiwan was more likely to be reunited with the Mainland, while 26.6% thought that Taiwan was more likely to be independent. In addition, 62% of the respondents opined that peaceful reunification was more advantageous to Taiwan, while for 27.4% of the respondents, Taiwan independence was more advantageous. Just 1.2% insisted on maintaining the cross-Strait status quo.
