Taiwan Research Institute Founder Warns of New Financial Crisis in 2018

Liu Tai-ying (劉泰英), founder of the Taiwan Research Institute, pointed out when interviewed yesterday that “because places like the US, Japan, and Europe have been adopting easy monetary policies for a long period of time, it has inadvertently created an asset bubble, though it’s not obvious currently. I predict that this bubble would surface next year, and the worst case scenario would be another financial crisis.”
Liu lamented the fact that “the last time the TAIEX hit 10,000 points, you couldn’t even get a table at a restaurant without a reservation; the effects of a booming economy could be seen everywhere. This time round however, the people are nonchalant about it. This clearly shows that there is a lack of domestic investment, and as a result consumer purchasing power is weak. This is a serious structural problem, one which the government should take seriously.”
