US President Trump signed the “Taiwan Travel Bill” into law on March 16th. Now that the Taiwan Travel Act (TTA) has entered into force, it would encourage visits of officials at all levels between the US and Taiwan, including the ROC president.
Chen Chu (陳菊), the incumbent Mayor of Kaohsiung, and John Deng (鄧振中), a Minister without Portfolio of the Executive Yuan (Cabinet), and other Taiwan officials would visit Washington, D.C. one after the other this week. According to the media, Chen will meet several senior US officials, including Randall Schriver, an Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, showing the degree of importance the US attached to Chen’s visit.
However, it was assumed that the government took the initiative to send Deng to the US while the US itself invited Chen. Although both of them were visiting the US when the TTA entered into force, it had nothing to do with the TTA.
In response to the TTA, the Foreign Ministry of the Mainland indicated that “China is extremely displeased and resolutely opposes it,” and the China’s retaliation against the US would be all-encompassing.
