On March 8th, Trump issued an executive order to impose a 25% tariff on US imports of steel and a 10% tariff on US imports of aluminum, temporarily excluding Canada and Mexico. Additionally, he indicated that if other countries would ensure US national security, the US would discuss a substitute plan with each trading partner. Yang Jen-ni (楊珍妮), Director General of the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, recently said that the US was Taiwan’s biggest steel-market, “we, of course, are striving for exemption !” She further said that the government would proceed simultaneously toward both national and product exemption.
John Deng (鄧振中), a Minister without Portfolio of the Executive Yuan (Cabinet), departed at the head of a trade/economic delegation on March 18th on a trip to the US, expecting to visit several agencies, such as the US Department of Commerce and the Office of the US Trade Representative, to understand the US’s tangible measures about imposing tariffs, and also to strive for exemption from the additional steel and aluminum tariffs that the US would impose.
