The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) plans to make renewable energy account for 20% of Taiwan’s total power supply by 2025; however, the exorbitant costs to build renewable energy generation facilities are often criticized. MOEA Minister Shen Jong-chin (沈榮津) yesterday indicated that it was initially estimated that cost of electricity per kilowatt hour, in the future, would rise by NT$ 0.27 owing to the renewable energy transformation plan. He added that counting gas prices and the asset reduction for mothballing Nuclear Power Plant No. 4, it was estimated that by 2025, electricity rates would rise by NT$ 0.5 kWh.
On the other hand, as the MOEA has emphasized that families that use less than 330 kWh per month will see no changes, families that use 500 kWh per month, for example, will pay an extra NT$ 85.
