In the Legislative Yuan’s extraordinary session on June 20, the plenary session passed in the third reading the amendment bill to the “Statute Governing Military Service for Officers and NCOs of the Armed Forces.” According to the estimate made at the end of April by the Veterans Affairs Council, approximately 54% of retired military personnel would be affected by the pension reforms. However, Yan Te-fa (嚴德發), Minister of National Defense, stressed yesterday that for 98.7% of the military in active duty, their pension payments would increase when retiring in accordance with the Statute, as amended.

Yan pointed out that the newly-amended Statute took more care of military personnel with lower seniority or with middle- or low-ranks, which would be helpful to improve military morale and promote the all-volunteer force policy.
