At the Lien-Xi meeting on July 13th, Xi Jinping, the CCP’s general secretary, made known his "four firm insistences"; Liu Jieyi, director of the Mainland’s Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council, indicated that this was the first time that Xi Jinping issued a long statement on the vital issue of cross-Strait relations. For this, Liu Jieyi induced "four becauses."

 

Liu Jieyi said, "because in order to push for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, jointly dedicating ourselves to national renaissance, is in conformance with the holistic interests of the nation, and in response to the trends of the times, having won the ardent support of compatriots across the Strait as the right path; because, regardless of how many tempests we have experienced, compatriots across the Strait have never separated in terms of national and cultural identity and feelings; because, despite the ups and downs in cross-Strait relations in the past decades, the overall trends are moving forward; because the two sides of the Strait are an inseparable community of shared destiny.
