The University of Kang Ning (UKN) announced yesterday that due to the impact of an aging population, the university college of its Tainan campus was unable to meet the recruitment numbers, and thus UKN decided to submit an application to the Education Ministry for returning to the junior college system and to cease operations of its Tainan campus as well as its university college.
If approved, UKN would be the first university in Taiwan to be downgraded from a university to a junior college. With regard to this, deputy Education Minister Yao Leeh-ter (姚立德) expressed his regret, adding that “the impact of an aging population on universities is significant.”
UKN was formerly known as Li De School of Management, and in 2015 the Taipei-based Kang Ning Junior College of Medical-Nursing and Management merged with Tainan’s Kang Ning University to form the present-day UKN, becoming the first private university in Taiwan encompassing tertiary education as well as the technical and vocational systems.
