After the legislative extraordinary session passed in the third reading the central government’s 2019 annual general budget bill last evening, Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced his resignation as Premier. In an extraordinary Cabinet meeting this morning, Lai announced his Cabinet’s resignation en masse.

Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌), a former Premier under the Chen Shui-bian administration, and Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁), a former legislator, have taken over as next Premier and Deputy Premier, respectively. The new Cabinet line up is slated to be finalized over the weekend and announced on Monday, January 14.
