Law to Add Life Imprisonment for Child Abuse Resulting in Death

A series of child abuse cases has hit the headlines in Taiwan recently. Legislators of both the ruling and opposition parties expressed support for amending the ROC Criminal Code to hike the penalties for child abuse. Yesterday, Justice Minister Tsai Ching-hsiang (蔡清祥) stated that the Justice Ministry had drafted an amendment bill to Article 165 of the Criminal Code concerning “offenses harming child development” in order to add a provision that “those who abuse a minor under the age of sixteen resulting in death shall be sentenced up to life in prison.” The draft amendment bill has been submitted to the Legislative Yuan for legislative action.
