Last week, KMT Chairman Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) tossed out that “If the KMT regains power, it will promote the concluding of a cross-Strait peace agreement.” Yesterday, the Cabinet stated that it would push for an amendment bill to the Statute Governing the Relations between People across the Taiwan Strait, stipulating that a plebiscite election must be held before a cross-Strait peace agreement could be concluded, and that terms and bars for the peace agreement must also be laid down. The amendment bill was listed as a top priority in the current legislative session, the Cabinet pointed out.
With regard to the purpose of the amendment bill, Cabinet spokeswoman Kolas Yotaka stated that the Cabinet hoped that before any agreements were to be concluded, the contents should be decided by the 23 million people in Taiwan in advance.
