Eric Chu (朱立倫), the immediate past New Taipei City Mayor, embarked on February 14 on a week-long “learning tour” to Silicon Valley. On February 19 (Pacific Time), Chu is slated to deliver a speech at Stanford University under the theme of “Taiwan’s New Economy: Innovation, People, and Government Efficiency.” Informed sources revealed that Chu would toss out a new cross-Strait narrative in the speech.
According to the same sources, with regard to the occasional conflicts and tensions across the Taiwan Strait and in the Taiwan-US-Mainland trilateral relationship, Chu would say he believed that these conflicts and frictions should be regarded as a “process of adjusting trade structures” in order to avoid the situation escalating into a new cold war.
In addition, Chu would especially stress Taiwan’s role as a “peace maker.” Chu would also opine that Taiwan, sandwiched between the US and the Mainland, fully understood the harm war would bring to the people, so Taiwan, in the trilateral relationship, had a responsibility to keep the conflict tension at a safe standard.
