In a seminar with Stanford University students in the morning of April 15 (Pacific Time), Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) predicted that after 2020, cross-Strait relations would face high risks caused by political polarization, so he proposed the aphorism “national defense depends on the US, technologies rely on Japan, markets bank on the Mainland, but efforts have to come from ourselves,” adding that he said these words from the perspective of national identity and big strategic picture and hoping that “Taiwan ought to be safe, people ought to be well-to-do.”
Han hoped that at that time, Taiwan’s leader would use his/her wisdom to handle cross-Strait relations, and that 50 million overseas Chinese were watching the development of Taiwan, and watching whether they considered Chinese culture as their roots. He went on to say that if overseas Chinese were willing to support Taiwan, the power and funds of full mobilization would be truly astounding.
