Terry Guo Needs to Win Acceptance from Han’s Fans

Compared to the KMT’s collective fright in entering the presidential race in 2016, this time, many hopefuls have entered the KMT’s presidential primary for 2020, which is a good phenomenon. However, it is a little late for Foxconn Chairman Terry Guo (郭台銘) to enter the KMT’s presidential primary because the Han vogue has gone viral for over two months, which is hard to abate. Therefore, how Terry Guo strives to win support from Han’s fans may face certain difficulties, demanding his great efforts.

At the KMT Central Standing Committee regular weekly meeting two days ago, KMT Chairman Wu Den-yi (吳敦義), in an unprecedented move, awarded a Diploma of Honor to Terry Guo, certifying his party membership of 50 years and in recognition, his vital contributions to the party. The move apparently shows that Terry Guo has great support among KMT high echelons. However, if the KMT wants to win the 2020 presidential race, it will rely on voters instead of the central party or some high echelons. Therefore, although the right to nominate a candidate for the race is exercised by the KMT’s party central, the KMT should pay more respect to voters’ opinions.

Han said, in a relieved tone, that “what a comfort to know that two people would hold up sky together should it fall.” Han’s valiant spirit can also be found in Terry Guo. However, Han’s sense of amiability with the grassroots could hardly be seen in Terry Guo. Therefore, if the “big tiger” wants to win acceptance from Han’s fans, it will need to tone down its domineering character first.

[Editor’s note: According to the KMT party charter, nomination of its presidential candidate shall be confirmed by the party congress, and not decided by the party chairman alone.]
