May 24, 2019
In the afternoon of May 22, USS Preble, a destroyer, and USS Walter S. Diehl, a replenishment oiler, sailed into the Taiwan Strait from waters off south-western Taiwan, heading north through the Strait and then entering the East China Sea. This was the fifth time that the US Navy passed through the Taiwan Strait in 2019. All five missions were conducted by two vessels and scheduled toward the end of months, while relevant information was released right after the missions were completed.
Reuters reported that the two US warships passed through the Taiwan Strait yesterday. Following the released news, our Ministry of National Defense (MND) also made public a statement, confirming this news and indicating that the MND had conducted surveillance and reconnaissance over the entire activity so as to keep a close eye on movements around the periphery of Taiwan’s sea and air space, adding that no unusual events occurred.
