Last evening, the KMT held its first TV presentation of campaign planks for its 2020 Presidential primary. The five KMT hopefuls focused on cross-Strait issues.

Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) stressed that “Taiwan is the priority and I will fully support the Republic of China.” Han also proposed four solutions to cross-Strait ties.

Terry Gou (郭台銘), of Foxconn, stated that with regard to the “1992 Consensus/one China with respective interpretations,” he believed that there was no consensus without respective interpretations. Gou stressed that one country/two systems would never be put in place in Taiwan.

Eric Chu (朱立倫), the immediate-past New Taipei City mayor, advocated peace, democracy, and prosperity and firmly opposed Taiwan independence, dictatorship, and one country/two systems. Chu said that all these were also the consensus reached by a majority of Taiwan people.

Chang Ya-chung (張亞中), an NTU professor of political science and principal of the Sun Yat-sen School, advocated that if elected President, he would seek a cross-Strait peace agreement with the Mainland by 2022.

Chou Hsi-wei (周錫瑋), a former Taipei County Executive, stated that “according to the ROC Constitution, the existing territory of the Republic of China covers the Taiwan area and the Mainland area,” adding that if elected President, he would push for cross-Strait peace talks.
