Formosat-7, the second satellite constellation jointly built by Taiwan and the US, was launched yesterday at 2:30 p.m. (Taiwan time) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida onboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, with President Tsai Ing-wen watching the launch live at the National Space Organization in Hsinchu. Tsai lauded the launch of Formosat-7 as a milestone in Taiwan’s space technology.
Formosat-7 connected a signal reception station in Taiwan at 8:48 p.m. yesterday. Formosat-7 is slated to pass over Taiwan six times a day, replacing Formosat-3 to provide meteorological data at low and mid latitudes, and is expected to increase the accuracy of weather forecasts by 10%.
