President Tsai Ing-wen’s support ratings have surged in recent opinion polls on the 2020 Presidential race. According to the results of the latest cross-referencing opinion poll released by the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation (TPOF,台灣民意基金會), a pro-Green polling organization, Tsai leads Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), Kaohsiung City Mayor, Terry Gou (郭台銘), of Foxconn, and Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), Taipei City Mayor. On his Facebook page yesterday, TPOF Chairman You Ying-lung (游盈隆), who had not long ago withdrawn from the DPP, pinpointed two major reasons for Tsai’s surge in opinion polls as follows:
1) Tsai’s recent lead in the polls is a result of the “bandwagon effect” generated by her winning the DPP’s 2020 Presidential primary.
2) The second reason is the “leadership consolidation effect.” You Ying-lung points out that as PRC President Xi Jin-ping tossed out the “exploring of a Taiwan program for one country, two systems” earlier this year, coupled with Hong Kong’s recent large-scale movement against the “amendment bill to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance,” people in Taiwan have deeply realized that China’s “one country, two systems” would be a disaster for us, so they naturally tend to consolidate Tsai’s leadership.
