Yesterday, the Legislative Yuan held a confirmation hearing on the nominations of Grand Justices. When asked by a legislator whether he was able to accept the “one country, two areas” tossed out by Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) in the KMT’s recent TV presentation of campaign planks for its 2020 Presidential primary, Shieh Ming-yan (謝銘洋), a Grand Justice nominee, supplied a negative answer.
Shieh stated he believed that “Taiwan is a state, and whether the state is called the Republic of China, or Taiwan people decide to change its name, he would respect their decision.” Shieh went on to say that “effect of our laws doesn’t extend to the Mainland, and vice versa.”
