The number of domestic tourists decreased sharply by 12 million in 2018, registering a negative growth for the second consecutive year. In addition, the number of Mainland travelers has declined in recent years, so the Cabinet’s Tourism Development and Promotion Committee proposed a program in 2018, hoping that school field trips could be increased to support domestic tourism. Later, the Ministry of Education agreed and amended relevant rules, adjusting the frequency of field trips from once to twice a year, starting September.
The Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications indicated that the 1.8 million elementary and junior high school pupils would become 3.6 million domestic tourists per year, creating around NT$8.3 billion in tourism value.
