Grand Justices to Issue Constitutional Interpretations on 3 Pension Reform Cases Today
Source: UDN
August 23, 2019
After taking up the petitions filed by 38 legislators for judicial review on the constitutionality of the new or newly-amended pension reform laws for military, civil servants and public school teachers, the Council of Grand Justices (CGJ) of the Judicial Yuan is slated to hand down Constitutional interpretations on the three pension reform cases this afternoon. This would be the first time for the CGJ to hand down three Constitutional interpretations at the same time. The soon-to-be-released interpretations are tantamount to an examination into the Tsai Ing-wen government’s pension reform policies, which may cause massive impacts.
According to informed sources, the CGJ may determine that part of the provisions concerning the new pension/annuities systems was unconstitutional. In that case, minor adjustments are expected to be made to the government’s pension reform policies under the CGJ’s decisions.
