Young Taiwan independence supporters Lee Chia-yu (李嘉宇) and Chen Yu-chang (陳俞璋), suspected of hurling red paint over the statue of the late President Chiang Kai-shek at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei on July 20 last year, were referred by the police to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office on charges of violating the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act.

Yesterday, the prosecutors decided not to indict the duo on the grounds that according to the letter of reply from the Management Office of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, the statue had been cleaned up and restored to its original state, so what they had done didn’t meet the requirements for vandalizing a national historic site stipulated in the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act.
