MOTC Makes a Gaffe by Releasing Out-dated Data about “Perilous” Bridges

On October 9, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) held a coordination meeting with local governments in order to get a better understanding of the situation of bridges facing local governments. Following the meeting, the MOTC made public that a total of 126 bridges around the nation were in urgent need of repairs, among which 39 bridges had yet to undergo repairs and maintenance. However, the governments of Taitung and Nantou Counties questioned whether the bridge information made public by the MOTC was out-of-date, bluntly stating that incorrect data would create panic in society.
The Public Works Departement under the Taitung County government stated that Songfeng Bridge in the county, which was on the list of the 39 bridges yet to be repaired, had actually been repaired two years ago, questioning whether the MOTC’s data was from 2016. In addition, the Public Works Department under the Nantou County government also pointed out that the MOTC’s data was not correct, saying that only five bridges in Nantou were awaiting repairs, not the seven listed by the MOTC.
