On October 10, the ROC National Day, President Tsai Ing-wen and Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), the KMT’s official presidential candidate, proposed their respective cross-Strait advocacies.
During her Double Tenth Message, Tsai rejected the “one China, two systems,” stating that the “ROC Taiwan” was the broadest consensus in society.
On the other hand, Han released a white paper on cross-Strait policies, where Han advocated the “1992 Consensus/one China with respective interpretations,” saying that both sides should restore mutual trust and rebuild frameworks of dialogue. Han stressed that no one should be allowed to undermine Taiwan, adding that if necessary, he would definitely bear arms to defend the ROC’s sovereignty. However, Han pointed out that currently, on either side of the Strait, the conditions did not exist for talks on issues over re-unification or independence.
In addition, Han, through his campaign office, officially challenged Tsai to a debate over cross-Strait policies for the first time on October 10. Han’s campaign office stated that the time and venue for the debate would be up to the DPP, expressing the hope that the DPP could make a decision as soon as possible.
With regard to Han’s challenge, Tsai simply asked “What is the rush?” Han responded by lambasting Tsai for not daring to debate him, asking “Of what are you afraid?”
