When asked by a City Councilmember whether Taipei would apply to host the 2030 Asian Games at the City Council yesterday, Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) indicated that he had discussed this issue with New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi (侯友宜), planning to cooperate with New Taipei City in applying under the name of Taipei and New Taipei, adding that however, City Hall was still studying how to proceed on the matter.
Hou yesterday stated that New Taipei City had hosted several international athletic meets, so cooperating with Taipei City would definitely be “one plus one is greater than two”, adding that if Taipei and New Taipei jointly applied to host the Asian Games, it would have a greater opportunity to succeed. Hou also stated that however, the estimated cost of applying for and hosting the Asian Games, including the construction of venues, totaled around NT$48.6 billion (US$1.6 billion), so this required funding from the central government, adding that otherwise, merely Taipei and New Taipei could not afford to host such a big event.
