The Hong Kong Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation (HKIAD), consisting of multiple students’ unions from institutions of higher learning in Hong Kong, visited Taiwan a week ago, hoping that the Tsai administration could push for the enactment of a Refugee Act to help Hong Kong people, who were politically persecuted in Hong Kong. In response, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) stated that at the current stage, Taiwan did not need a Refugee Act as we had the existing Statute Governing Hong Kong & Macao Relations.
To this matter, Keith Fong (方仲賢), President of the Hong Kong Baptist University Students' Union, posted an article on his Facebook page on December 8, stating that he was disappointed in the DPP. Moreover, in the article, Fong criticized that as Taiwan’s presidential and legislative elections were approaching, if the DPP just verbally supported Hong Kong people in their protests without providing concrete measures to support Hong Kong protestors, people would inevitably think that the DPP only wanted to use Hong Kong people’s blood to gain Taiwan people’s votes.
