Truth Untold: Wu Den-yih Does Not Want to Leave Debts Behind

KMT Chairman Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) tendered his resignation to the KMT Central Standing Committee today. Earlier, he had wished to stay on for two more months until a chairmanship by-election could be held. The outside circles only saw a chairman, whose party had lost in the elections, was unwilling to step down, but the truth of the matter was that he did not want to leave debts to the new party chairman.

According to KMT staff, if the election subsidies by the government, calculated on the basis of ballots won, to be received in February were handled properly, the party would not only settle all of its debts but also have NT$50 to NT$60 million left in its coffers.

However, facing questions from both within and without the party, as long as he did not step down, he would be viewed as clinging on to power; therefore, he chose to let go.
