In an exclusive interview with the BBC, President Tsai Ing-wen mentioned that “we call ourselves the Republic of China (Taiwan),” adding that “invading Taiwan is something that is going to be very costly for China.”

In response, the KMT said that “we firmly believe that our military is capable of defending national security; however, we suggest that President Tsai think about how to ease conflicts between the two sides.”

Chao Chun-shan (趙春山), emeritus professor of the Graduate Institute of China Studies at Tamkang University (淡江大學), pointed out that “according to the Constitution, the name of our country is the Republic of China (ROC).” Chao added that “when referring to the country, we should just abide by the Constitution, since the ROC is still the common denominator of the people on Taiwan.”
