Taiwan Has World’s Most Costly 5G Band / Total Bids Hit Record of NT$138bn

The first phase of Taiwan’s 5G auction concluded yesterday with three records: the highest spectrum bids in Taiwan’s history with a total of NT$138 billion, the world’s highest unit price per band, and the most telecom operators participating in an auction.
Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信), the biggest winner in the auction, secured the widest spectrum band for NT$46.2 billion. In the most sought-after 3.5GHz band, 85% was captured by Chunghwa Telecom, FarEasTone (遠傳) and Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大). This brought concerns that the 5G market would become an oligopoly.
