The Mainland’s “2020 working session of the Taiwan Affairs Group” was held in Beijing on January 19. This was an important working session where the Mainland’s officials involved in Taiwan affairs gathered to discuss policies toward Taiwan and cross-Strait relations after Taiwan’s recent elections. Wang Yang (汪洋), deputy director of the Taiwan Affairs Group and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, indicated in the session that actual effects of preferential measures toward Taiwan and policies beneficial to Taiwan compatriots should be improved, and that cross-Strait exchanges among the youths should be strongly promoted. In addition, Wang reiterated that the Mainland insisted on the one-China principle, firmly opposing and containing any forms of Taiwan independence.
In response to the keynote, including Xi Jinping’s 5 points, reiterated in the Mainland’s working session of the Taiwan Affairs Group, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) indicated that opposing the “one country, two systems” formulation was the consensus of Taiwan people, so the Mainland’s policies toward Taiwan were completely detached from the reality of cross-Strait relations. The MAC went on to state that the Beijing authorities should reflect that such a long-term and unrealistic approach toward Taiwan was not a correct path.
