Possible Cooperation between KMT and TPP in New Legislature

The new legislature will be sworn in on February 1 after the Lunar New Year holidays. As all opposition parties together failed to form a majority in the Legislative Yuan (LY), there will be room for them to cooperate, which would otherwise be impossible. After the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), becoming the third largest party in LY in its debut in the legislative elections, called for an “Opposition Alliance,” the KMT legislative caucus immediately extended an olive branch. KMT legislative party whip Tseng Ming-chung (曾銘宗) indicated that he would target bread-and-butter and economic bills, revealing that he would jointly introduce a bill with legislators of TPP affiliation if they shared the same ideals as he. Moreover, Tseng indicated that the KMT would also cooperate with the TPP in electing conveners of the LY’s eight committees, adding that all elected KMT legislators would meet on January 31 for a session of strategies in relation to these committee convener elections in the new legislature.
