“WeCare Kaohsiung” and several other civil groups have launched a recall drive against Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜). On January 17, it was confirmed that these civil groups cleared the bar of the first-stage hurdle by securing enough signed proposals, officially entering the second stage of seeking co-sponsorships.

According to Kaohsiung City Hall, should the proposal of recall be validated after passing the second-stage hurdle of co-sponsorships, the expenditures for a recall election are estimated to be approximately NT$80 million, and should Han be recalled as mayor after the recall election, a by-election then should be held, meaning that the estimated overall expenditures for the two elections may come in at NT$130 million. City Hall said that it would seek subsidies from the central government.

Responding through the Information Bureau under Kaohsiung City Hall, Han stated that he was currently stepping up efforts to strive for good governance, adding that with regard to the recall drive against him, he would respect the decision made by Kaohsiung residents.
