According to a dispatch by Reuters, an informed source points out that the Trump administration is considering amending US regulations to allow it to block shipments of chips to Huawei Technologies Co., Mainland China’s telecom giant, from suppliers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker.
In addition, a news story carried by the Wall Street Journal reports that the US Commerce Department is drafting changes to its foreign direct product rule to restrict foreign companies’ use of US technology for military or national-security products, and if chip factories world-wide intend to use US equipment to produce chips for Huawei, they would be required by the Department to obtain licenses.
TSMC responded yesterday by saying that as these were just speculations, coupled with the fact that the US rules and regulations had yet to be revised, the TSMC would not answer any hypothetical questions.
