Wu Poh-hsiung: 1992 Consensus Will Become Brighter as Time Goes By

In a plenum of the KMT Reform Committee on June 19, KMT Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) clearly stated that “the 1992 Consensus served as an important tool for seeking commonalities while shelving differences in cross-Strait ties in the past,” eliciting dissatisfaction from KMT bigwigs, including former KMT chairmen Lien Chan (連戰), Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), and Wu Den-yih (吳敦義).

Yesterday, former KMT chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) stressed that the 1992 Consensus was not out of date and ought to be deepened further.

Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄), a former KMT Chairman, has issued a three-point statement as follows:

1) The preciousness of the “1992 Consensus” lies in both sides of the Taiwan Strait pushing for cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation by seeking commonalities while shelving differences and disputes. Past practices have proved that this is feasible. Just because of the DPP’s refusal to recognize the 1992 Consensus, the KMT should cherish it instead and deeply believe that the “1992 Consensus” can create a cross-Strait win-win situation.

2) As former President Ma and former KMT chairman Lien made contributions to peaceful cross-Strait developments in the past, Chairman Chiang should respect them and take their views as a reference.

3) I (Wu Poh-hsiung) have also participated in cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, so I deeply believe in the importance of political mutual trust in cross-Strait ties. As long as the KMT firmly safeguards the spirit of the ROC Constitution, the “1992 Consensus” will never be out of date, and will remain unshakable and become brighter as time goes by to continuously make a contribution to cross-Strait reconciliation, mutual assistance, and win-win situations.
