Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is reported that travel agencies are facing a wave of closures. In response, Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), stated that as the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic abroad was still severe, only domestic tourism could provide an impetus for the tourism industry in Taiwan, where the pandemic had already ebbed. Lin added that the tourism industry must undergo transformation.
Lin pointed out that the MOTC’s bailout program 3.0 aimed to subsidize those operators who have their minds set on continuing their businesses in the tourism industry and were willing to implement transformation and upgrades. Lin went on to say that the tourism market could be reshuffled as a result of the pandemic, permitting uncompetitive operators to close up their businesses. Lin’s statements were criticized as misspeaking.
