Yesterday, the Education Ministry made public that the entry ban would be lifted on students from 5 more countries, i.e., Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, meaning that a total of 6,795 students from 18 countries and areas, already matriculated, would be allowed to return to Taiwan for their studies.

As universities around the world were in the process of recruiting new students, colleges in Taiwan urged the government to lift the entry ban on new students from the 18 countries and areas to study in Taiwan, or the source of students for higher education in the new academic year would be greatly impacted. In response, the Department of Higher Education under the Education Ministry stated that the matter was under assessment.

Yesterday, the “Group Pushing for Mainland Students Returning to Taiwan for Studies,” organized by Mainland students in Taiwan, wrote to Education Minister Pan Wen-chung (潘文忠) again, expressing the hope that the Education Ministry would include Mainland students the graduating class of 2020 in the second batch of the priority list to be allowed entry into Taiwan in consideration of their education rights and interests and urgent need to return to Taiwan.
