To Love Taiwan with Veritable Truth, Rationality and Seek a New Cross-Strait Consensus Series Part 5 (Final):

Transcending Blue and Green, Don’t Be Hijacked by Politicians

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan, ROC)

 Translation of an Except

For the two sides across the Strait and for the ruling and opposition parties of Taiwan, it is not true that there is no foundation for consensuses; of course, there exist divergences. The important point is between consensuses and divergences, do we choose to expand the consensuses or magnify divergences? If the majority chooses to focus on "consensuses," then we should devote our wisdom and efforts to how to shelve disputes, on how to seek commonalities, while shelving differences, and how to galvanize consensuses. If the majority only think of targeting their divergences, attempting to annihilate the other side, then there is only one result, that is, both sides of the Strait as well as the ruling and opposition parties, will be eternally engaged in confrontation and rivalry, leading to mutual destruction!

The support ratings of President Tsai, and even the ruling party, continue to drop near the bottom. Whether for annuities reform or for the forward-looking plan, the ruling and opposition parties are extending the frontlines, leading to confrontations between the police and citizens in the streets; the end result is imaginable. For the politicians, manipulating "divergences" and escalating rivalry is where their interests lie. Therefore, these politicians endlessly stir up cross-Strait hostility, expanding ruling-opposition rivalries, as if there only existed eternal divergences and rivalries between the two sides of the Strait, and there were not a glimmer of cooperation and consensus. Over many years, the framework for thinking of many people has been hijacked; they only know how to utilize the dichotomy of reunification and independence, and of Blue and Green, to differentiate issues, thus seeing what is one-sided and negative, and leaving confrontation as the only choice in action.

Today, if we truly love Taiwan, we must seek to establish a cross-Strait and ruling-opposition consensus. The top agenda is self-emancipation from the framework of rivalry erected by politicians, turning it into a transcending framework for thinking with a higher stature. We will be surprised to find out that by changing a framework for thinking, divergences, in fact, are artificial manipulations, and that obsessing with divergences will only benefit those politicians with ulterior motives.

Originally, there have always existed many possible consensuses across the Strait and between the ruling and opposition parties in Taiwan; discovering and nurturing such consensuses will, we are sure, build a mutually beneficial and multiple win situation. (End of series)
