Tsai Ying-wen Is Sandwiched by Lai Ching-te and Ke Wen-je

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan, ROC)

June 21, 2017

 Translation of an Except

Just as President Tsai was irate over the breaking of diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Panama and insisted on taking a hardline, in the blink of an eye, she found herself sandwiched between Lai Ching-te and Ke Wen-je for their ambush on her cross-Strait polices. Lai Ching-te not only threw out "pro-China, loving Taiwan," he even brought his rhetoric to the United States for greater broadcasting in order to show his path was different from Tsai Ying-wen’s. Ke Wen-je, a Green camp ally, used the advocacy of "cross-Strait like a family" to have successfully secured the holding as usual of the "Taipei-Shanghai Twin Cities Forum" and taking a different path.

The approaches of Lai Ching-te and Ke Wen-je both seek breakthroughs upon the established path of Tsai Ing-wen, showng the Green camp’s anxiety vis-à-vis cross-Strait relations. Analyzing the gambits of Lai Ching-te and Ke Wenzhe, from their motives, manner of narrative, the effect of impacts, the two impacts, greatly differ.

Let’s first talk about Lai Ching-te. The Taiwan independence color of Lai Ching-te has always been bright; when he said "pro-China, loving Taiwan" in the city council, it was incredible to all circles. Not only that, he even took this narrative to the United States, continuing to talk about it with high visibility, making a point that that he not only intended to challenge Tsai Ying-wen's path, a greater significance was to challenge in the 2020 election. Now that Tsai Ing-wen’s support ratings are in the doldrums, the Taiwan independence faction could possibly be betting on Lai’s potential, supporting him to attack 2020, thus proposing a surprise strategy on cross-Strait paths ahead of time.

Next let’s talk about Ke Wen-je’s cross-Strait path. Two years ago, dark Green Ke Wen-je used the street lingo of "cross-Strait as one family" to successfully secure the CCP’s approval and landed on the Mainland as mayor of the capital city. Thus, he has unique skills and approaches in politics, and also knows how to best use his "non-partisan” identity to score a touchdown by dodging opponents one after another. This time, he employed the old tactic of taking advantage of stagnant cross-Strait relations of the Tsai government, clamoring "cross-Strait stalemate is no solution." Besides shaping a mid-way image for himself, the purpose is also seeking support for next year’s mayoral re-election, the effects being not bad.

The national leadership has no right to be idle, nor the right to hold a grudge; otherwise, when the situation changes, the public will turn direction. The situation today is, when she still insists on her path, when she wants to take care of the core support of the Green camp, some comrades and allies of the core support have already become impatient and left the ranks.
