We Only See the Tearing of Social Fabric during Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day Celebrations

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

October 5, 2017
 Translation of an Excerpt

On the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Lai Ching-te spared no efforts to water-down his "Taiwan independence discourse" at the Legislative Yuan, saying that the Tsai government would not declare Taiwan independence, nor would it hold a plebiscite on Taiwan independence. At the same time, President Tsai Ing-wen spoke out through official media, playing the old tune of seeking a "new model" in cross-Strait relations, in the hope that Lai Ching-te’s loose cannon of "Taiwan independence narrative" would not ignite grave consequences during the CCP’s “19th National People’s Congress.” It is a correct approach for the Tsai government to remain on the alert in cross-Strait relations; however, seeing only the harm of the "Taiwan independence discourse" for cross-Strait relations, while being oblivious to the tearing of fabric among domestic social communal groups is, on the other hand, a more serious blind spot.

Being the ruling party for the second time, the DPP is still using the thinking of the Chen Shui-bian era to stir up people’s nerves, using consciousness of Taiwan independence and national identity to rupture social fabric, using political tactics to cover up their incompetence in reviving the economy, and using cross-Strait relations to simplify the predicament that Taiwan faces in development. Just imagine, were it not for arrogance, how would Lai Ching-te have dared to publicly speak out, "I advocate Taiwan independence" in Parliament? And were it not for calculated cruelty, how could Tsai Ying-wen have remained undisturbed when changes in cross-Strait relations impacted the livelihoods of tourism operators? Were it not for a lack of identity, how could Su Jia-chyuan have dared to “banish” the national flags so audaciously? This mentality of “power is supreme,” besides lacking democratic culture, neither deserves the votes and expectations they have garnered.

Lai Ching-te repeatedly tried to water-down his Taiwan independence narrative, confirming his cavalierness and shallowness. Nevertheless, after failing in her slogan of "maintaining the status quo," Tsai Ying-wen turns to urging the erection of a "new model" for cross-Strait interactions; her own answer, we are afraid, is also blank, waiting for others to fill. What is most miserable is that after the act of a loose cannon for Taiwan independence, the public are being asked to shoulder all the costs.
